Electrical Trace Heating Installation

Electrical trace heating, also known as trace heating or surface heating, is the name given to a system used to maintain or raise the temperature of pipes and vessels.

Trace heating is an electrical element run in physical contact with a surface such as a pipe or vessel. Once the trace heating has been applied the surface must then be covered with thermal insulation to stop heat loss. Heat generated by the element then maintains the temperature of the surface to the required level.

Trace heating systems may be used to protect pipes, vessels and the like from freezing, or to maintain process temperatures where substances are used that would solidify at ambient temperatures thereby becoming unworkable.

Heat Trace System is also used widely in the prevention of legionella, maintaining a temperature within pipe work that it is impossible for the cultures to develop in.

The system is controlled by a pre set thermostat so you are able to rest assured that the trace heating will automatically switch on when the temperature reaches the allotted point thereby alleviating any unwanted burst pipes etc should the building be unoccupied for any length of time.

To ensure that the heat generated by the trace heating is not lost thermal insulation should be installed. The thickness and density of the thermal insulation should be appropriate to suit the application and duty. To finish the thermal insulation should be clad in foil, PIB, stainless steel, aluminium or a cement finish depending on the level of mechanical protection required. Heat Trace System For Frost Protection
